About the wineries

Waipara Wine Cellars is a boutique distributor, specialising in wines crafted locally, from vineyards in the Waipara Valley, Canterbury and Marlborough regions. The Vineyard Owners ad Winemaker established this company to bring their wines directly to you, provide sales support, personal service and raise brand awareness of their highest quality wines.

Waipara Downs is one of the Waipara Valleys pioneering vineyards established in 1986, with small plantings of Chardonnay, Riesling and Pinot Noir. These low yielding, aged Waipara vines produce elegant, full flavoured wines, assisted by careful vineyard management, hand harvesting and small batches using the best of traditional and new world winemaking methods.

The Whitestone Vineyard, Waipara Valley, was established in 1998 by Max & Velda Smith with 4.5 hectares each of Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir grapes.

This truly unique site is protected by a natural; terrace running the length of the vineyard. A menu of limestone, silts and river gravels creates a rather lean foundation, however these factors have benefits - its free draining and a reduced leaf canopy allows the fruit to be exposed for full ripening. Natural air flow down the river bed protects the vines from frosts and the hot day and cool night temperatures enhance flavour concentration. This terroir is very well suited to Pinot, in all its forms…Noir, Gris, Blanc and aromatics such as Riesling excel.

The wines served today show all the fabulous regional characteristics of the Waipara Valley and winemaker Scott Berry is careful to ensure the wines retain their unique personalities.

Northfield - from the iconic Frog Rock and Waipara Valley Vineyards

Our wine making philosophy mirrors the care we take with our grapevine in the vineyards. We are aiming to produce wines that clearly reflect our vineyards’ unique combinations of soil, water and aspect and the particular clones of each varietal that we have planted along with each vintage’s external influences and development based on that year’s weather.

Each of these elements combine with the careful handling at the winery and meticulous monitoring of every stage of the fermentation and aging process to create delicious wines with personality and potential.

Bascand Estate - In the late 1870’s Charles Bascand captioned the steamer "SS Waipara" in and around New Zealand ports, delivering stores and supplies. Today the Bascand family own vineyards in Marlborough and the Waipara Valley, allowing the Bascand brand to bring the best of both regions to you.
